The invite was simple enough ‘would you like to come with us out on Ian’s boat?’. The answer was never going to be no. Ian’s boat turned out to be the divine Hermione III, built in Hobart in 1914. It was a grey day, cloudy but the light was perfect. We left Queenscliff marina for a jaunt out in the bay, along the shore past the quarantine station, out to visit the seals and back again in time for a late lunch.
Danny took the helm and we were treated to the Mingulay Boat Song as we drifted along. It was a beautiful day and a sad day. Danny had recently been diagnosed with an aggressive and inoperable cancer. On this day we didn’t know how the following months would unfold but it was a lovely few hours to sit quietly and enjoy the company of good friends.
